HALF, NUMBERS 1 THRU 10, most importantly.
I’ve always wondered why older folks, myself included, worry about ‘dating ourselves.’ And no, it’s not the number. Ideally
one should be proud to reach a certain age, but then in this youth-obsessed culture I suppose it could have a negative
affect looking for a job or just interacting with younger folk who don’t appreciate the history and significance of someone
who has achieved x number of years.
I’m grateful to have lived through the recent technological revolution but also earlier decades when
people actually visited their neighbors with open doors and sat on the front porch without staring at their cell phones.
Then, there’s Dad -the closest one in the family to that ’100′ mark-who remembers before there was TV, before air travel and even
before cars were common -when horse and buggy was the main transportation. Pretty amazing to see such changes in 1 lifetime!
By the way, just saw on TV tonight the story of Jim, a 98-year-old ex-fisherman who just learned to read and write , in his 90s , and just wrote a book about an interesting life of 98 years!
Just a few thoughts on this double occasion of Dad’s return home and Thanksgiving eve. Happy Thanksgiving.
BERKELEY, Calif. (KGO) — Elena Griffing, 85, is a remarkable woman and is celebrating 65 years on the job. She hasn’t had a sick day since Dwight Eisenhower was inaugurated president.
The energetic woman has been working for Alta Bates Summit for 65 years.
“I love to come to work. I really, truly do,” said Griffing.
She started in 1946 when Harry Truman was president. Back then, minimum wage was 40 cents an hour. She has never stopped wearing three-inch high heels, even after hospital founder Alta Bates told her to stop wearing them because she might fall and sue.
“You cannot not smile when you see Elena walking down the hall; I mean, running down the hall,” said critical care Dr. Glenn Petersen.
She got hired when she came in for lab tests and the phone was ringing nonstop.
“One of the doctors said, ‘What do you do?’ and she said, ‘I’m a secretary’ and he said, ‘Well answer the damn telephone.’ She answered the telephone and they hired her,” said Elena’s brother “Bud” Celestre.
And Elena hasn’t had a sick day in 60 years.
“I wouldn’t have gone home then because I wasn’t sick. They made me go home and I was furious,” said Griffing.
When she had her appendix out, she was back on the job the next day, typing with an IV in her arm. Back then she had one of Berkeley’s first electric typewriters, but she succumbed to the computer.
“I’m still learning. I got one 15-minute lesson,” said Griffing.
“She’s relevant, she’s modern, she’s refreshing, her attitude is just amazing,” said Alta Bates Summit CEO David Bradley.
Elena is still a member of the Frank Sinatra Fan Club. And how does she get to work?
“I drive now. I didn’t learn how to drive until I was 67,” said Griffing. “I want to go from my desk to the morgue with nothing in between.”
He says she’d like to work another five years and the CEO says “How can you refuse an offer like that?”
EDITOR’S NOTE: I talked to Ms. Griffing by phone several years ago when my Father was at Alta Bates. It was a real revelation to talk to this piece of living hsitory, if you will. Griffing told me that she had outlived just about all her friends and associates at Alta Bates. My father , Dr Jerome Kaufman, was about the only doctor left of the old guard , she said, after the recent loss of the last of the doctors she knew (other than Dad). She spoke with the enthusiasm of new employee. I had hoped to have lunch with her and my Dad and still hope to now , sooner than later, after seeing this recent story/celebration on her 60 years. Congrats to Alta Bates for their appreciation of this rare employee and their willingness to keep her in their employ, unlike so many other instutions these days, which encourage early retirement of their older, expensive employees.
